Typical setup for frying whole turkeys.
Items & things needed:
* High output propane cooker.
* Propane bottle with hose and adjustable regulator.
* 40 quart pot with about 5 gallons of cooking oil.
* A thermometer with a 12" stem that will read from 50 to 500 degrees.
* A quiet place out of the wind with a level, fairly hard surface.
* A few other things that are critical but not shown.
This is a typical setup for frying whole turkeys. I know this
will work well because, as you can see from my equipment, we have fried many, many turkeys in this
exact location. The cooker is 12" tall with a broad base and a high pressure cast iron burner,
which provides a convenient, safe cooking height. The hose is five feet long which allows the
propane tank to be placed a safe distance from the cooker without creating a tripping hazzard. The
regulator is adjustable from 0 to 20 pounds pressure, which gives you complete control of the flame
output. The pot is a forty quart heavy duty stock pot which is the absolute best size for frying
whole turkeys and is also suitable for many other uses. The propane tank is just another propane
tank, what can you say about a propane tank? The critical items that you cannot see are a 12"
thermometer, an ice chest filled with the cold drinks of your choice, and a few comfortable chairs
for you and your friends.
Just a few tips to remember:
Check all connections for leaks.
Make sure cooker is level and on a hard surface.
Locate propane bottle downwind from cooker so any leak you might
have will be carried away from the flame.
Make sure the hose does not create a tripping hazzard.
Keep small children & pets away from cooking area.
As a matter of safety, you may want to turn the flame off when placing the turkey in the oil
or removing the turkey from the oil. It only takes a minute to relight, and will prevent any chance
of flame up if the oil should spill over.
